A man died Wednesday night after he was struck on D.C.’s Capital Beltway near the Capital Beltway off-ramp in Arlington, Va., police said.

Emergency crews responded to the 1500 block of Walter Reed Drive, just north of the D.C. line, around 9:30 p.m. to reports of a person injured, Arlington County police said. They arrived to find the man, identified as Theophilus Whitaker, 40, of Mount Pleasant, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are awaiting an autopsy to determine the man’s cause of death.

Police believe Whitaker, who is black, was struck by a vehicle, and that the incident occurred in the NB lane of the Beltway and not the SB lane as some media outlets are reporting.

The interstate was reopened around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
