With “Four Lives Lost,” journalist Mary Mapes has taken a decade of investigations and gone back to the life of Texas cop Justin Kirkland, who was shot dead at a parole checkpoint in 2003.

How did this case get so little attention? Why do so many Americans pay little attention to crime?

In a crowded “Nightline” timeslot earlier this month, Mapes and her crew found that some numbers really are too shocking to accept: The number of homicides on an annual basis has more than doubled since 1993.

The number of homicides in Texas has tripled. If numbers for Texas are translated to the U.S. as a whole, those in 2007 increased to a level not seen since 1993.
